As a young student of fine-art, Alif Laila produced sketches in her home-town, Dhaka, Bangladesh. These pencil sketches were created between 1977 and 1981. This was the beginning of it all, when Alif started to develop a new connection with the world around her, and shape her perception. In the absence of color, textures of a pencil give such life and character to a form and feeling. It is one of the purest forms of expression in art. It is "like the portrayal of the mood and form of a raag in Alaap (introduction to a raag), you can feel and follow the refinement in the growing layers of tone and feeling in both forms alike."
